DEFENDERS OF THE AXE #2
an exploration of local guitar sounds

Held August 1st 2006 at:  Loop Bar. 23 Meyers Place, Melbourne. http://www.looponline.com.au Photos & live audio captured by Zac Keiller.

Winterville: delivered the goods with his distinct use of the Fender Bass VI baritone guitar. Mixed with field recordings, loops & bow, the mood was sparse, only punctuated by the thick Morricone'ish notes emanating from the baritone. His set was not able to be recorded, but check out samples of his work here: http://www.myspace.com/wintervillemusic Barnaby Oliver: is a British guitarist now living in Melbourne. Responsible for such concepts as the Wall of E Electric guitar Ensemble featuring 17 players all tuned to the chord of E. His set this evening consisted of close-contact guitar manipulation with no effects, utilizing beating, bending, feed back, detuned distorted drones & other forms of axe abuse. SAMPLE 01  -  SAMPLE 02

Seth Rees: is an NZ guitarist/producer living in Melbourne. Reknowned for his unique & sonic aesthetic with a guitar. Seth is able to achieve a rare mixture of atmospheres without losing the real sound of the guitar itself. Seth relies on technique, not just effects, & this was fairly evident once he began flailing his guitar on the floor. It looked funny, but it worked! SAMPLE 01  -  SAMPLE 02 Chris Smith: has been credited as many things since the early 90s. One of these being one of the first solo atmospheric drone players in Melbourne. How much of this is certain is not known. Circling the floor like a caged animal, his set felt closer to me like blues guitar than the wall of sound he's been known for. Very sparse, but mournful notes & pluckings. Great use of sustained notes & silence.  SAMPLE
